Farmhouse Interior Design Trends to Transform Your Home

1 – Barn Doors

Barn doors are a MUST for farmhouse design, and they add rustic charm to any space. But there are a few things you need to know before adding one to your home.

First, most barn doors need staining before they’re ready for installation. To maintain its rustic appearance, lightly sand the wood then apply stain with a rag. For best results, apply the stain with a wide paintbrush and allow it to sit for a few moments, then, using your rag, rub the stain into the wood. Also, remember to wear gloves, because the project will likely get a bit messy.

Second, barn door packages can be expensive when you purchase them from hardware stores. Luckily, there’s several ways to make your own DIY barn door. For a great DIY guide, see this tutorial. Although you can build your own barn door, you’ll still have to purchase the appropriate hardware to hang it.

Third, when you install your barn door, you’ll want to start with a header. Make sure everything is properly level. The last thing you want is a door that’s hung on an angle. Also, because the hardware and doors can be heavy, you may consider enlisting a second pair of hands. For more information and helpful insight, see this barn door installation guide.

2 – Weathered Wood

There are many ways you can incorporate weathered wood into your home design. Let’s have a look at some options:

  1. Wood Accent Wall – Accent walls are a great way to add diversity to your home design without overcomplicating the overall effect. They both draw the eye and allow for creative freedom. In addition, you can even create your very own weathered wood accent wall on budget. There’s companies like Stikwood that sell peel and stick packages that you apply directly to your wall. It couldn’t be easier!
  2. Weathered Wood Furniture – Weathered furniture can turn any basic decor into a rustic dream. Plus, you can save some money and complete a DIY to weather your furniture. First, you’ll want to purchase high-quality white wood paint. Next, you’ll mix the paint in water and paint your furniture with the diluted paint. This process will allow the wood base to maintain its appeal while adding a weathered element.
  3. Weathered Wood Flooring – If you have hardwood flooring, you can create a weathered effect by following the above (⇡) tutorial.
  4. Weathered Mantle – If you own a fireplace and a wooden mantle, why not increase its rustic charm by following the tutorial explained above?
  5. Reclaimed Furniture – Reclaimed furniture has several benefits: (1) it’s cost effective; (2) it promotes recycling; and (3) it can add a farmhouse design to any home. So, the next time you drive by a sign for a garage sale, why not take a look? With a little sand and stain, you can turn even the most out-dated decor and furniture into a nearly knew piece.

3 – Farmer’s Market Vibe

Image yourself walking through the crowded aisles of a farmer’s markets, casting your gaze over the tables of vintage jars, burlap sacks, and delicious food. Do you have the image in your mind?

Great! Now think about all the interior design possibilities! The next time you’re at a farmer’s market or flea market, keep an eye out for anything that would be an appealing addition to your home’s farmhouse decor. Perhaps you notice some wooden crates that you can use on your shelf or even hang on your wall. Maybe you noticed some vintage, speckled jars that can serve as a great centrepiece.

4 – Wooden Beams

Exposed wooden dreams are many homeowner’s dream come true. They create a wonderful, appealing contrast that makes your ceiling appear higher. What’s not to love?

Plus, they are great for adding a farmhouse element to your home.

5 – Eye-catching Light Fixtures

Light fixtures are a relatively simple way to add rustic design to your home. Your kitchen or dining area offers the best space to change your light fixture from a simple product to an appealing design.

They can draw the eye and create a unique element to your farmhouse interior. Mason jar fixtures are one of my new favourite products. They can add a rustic charm while incorporating smoothly into the overall design of your home.

6 – Farmhouse Sink

Who wouldn’t like an extra deep sink? These practical sinks also come in a range of colours and finishes, including black, copper, and stainless steel. Personally, the traditional white is my all-time favourite. It ties in seamlessly with most kitchen designs!

7 – Warm Neutral Color Palette

If you’re trying to obtain a farmhouse design, a warm neutral paint option is a much. Consider opting for a tan or beige, keeping the base relatively light to brighten your interior.

8 – Hardwood Flooring

Wood flooring is a farmhouse design essential. Consider going with a darker, natural option that’s polished by retains an original appearance.

9 – An Exposed Brick or Stone Wall

Increase your rustic charm with an exposed stone or brick wall. For some ideas, try transforming your wood mantle to a brick or stone design. You can also use stone as a backsplash in your kitchen!

What is Stucco? And Should I Have it Installed?

The history of stucco dates back to ancient Greece, where Mediterranean houses used this exterior to protect their homes from the dry conditions. When the Spaniards came to the New World, they also brought this exterior trend with them and introduced stucco to the American southwest and Mexico.

What is Stucco Made Of?

But what is stucco made of, and how does it provide durable protection against the elements? Traditional stucco is made from the 4 following ingredients; however some formulas differ depending on the contractor:

  • Portland cement: created from clay and chalk, Portland cement hardens under water
  • Sand
  • Water
  • Lime: increases permeability

These ingredients then harden into a formidable material that requires little maintenance. Also, depending on the application method, this exterior option can create different finishes and textures, making it a highly customizable option.

In addition, the stucco materials can also be mixed with certain pigments to form a variety of colors.

How is Stucco Applied?

The stucco materials are first mixed, then applied over a wire mesh, known as a lath. This structure allows the stucco to properly and securely adhere to your home’s surface.

Traditionally, stucco is applied in 3 coats. Let’s have a closer look at each step:

  1. A scratch coat is dispersed over the lath
  2. The brown coat is added, providing additional strength and acting as a base for the third coat
  3. The third or ‘finish coat’ goes on last

Different contractors may apply your stucco using alternative methods. Before hiring a company to install stucco on your home, ask for their method of application.

Benefits of Stucco

Stucco has many benefits. Let’s have a look at some of the features this home exterior offers:

  • Fire resistant: Unlike vinyl siding, stucco holds up extremely well under intense heat. With a one-hour firewall rating, it’s a safer choice for condo or apartment buildings that have multi-family residents.
  • Tight Seal: Because stucco is a seamless exterior option, it protects against the weather better than most other choices.
  • Customizable: In addition to the customizable features I included earlier, stucco can also be painted. Rather than install a brand new exterior to achieve a desired colour, you can simply purchase stucco paint from your local hardware store and apply it. Also, you could install stucco coating for additional protection. For more information on the difference between stucco paint and stucco coating, see this previous post.
  • Long-lasting: Depending on the quality and application process, the average life-span of stucco is 50-60 years, which is almost twice as long as vinyl siding. However, with stucco, if it’s maintained properly, it has been known to last much longer. For more information on stucco maintenance, see this previous post.
  • Rot and fungus resistant: Since the materials in stucco are breathable, it does not rot or cultivate fungal growth once exposed to wet conditions.
  • Boosts Curb Appeal and Increases House Value: Undoubtedly, stucco offers an appealing design. It’s seamless finish and texture make it an ideal option to improve the overall design of your home’s exterior. Also, because it lasts longer and contains the above advantages, it’s known to increase a home’s resale value.
  • Energy Efficiency: Compared to other exterior options, such as vinyl siding, stucco is much more energy efficient. Because the materials are generally denser and thicker, the final product offers more protection against energy leaks and will help decrease the numbers on your energy bills.

Disadvantages of Stucco

Stucco doesn’t have many disadvantages. However, a few things to keep in mind before you choose this exterior is:

  • If your residence area is prone to ground shifts, then your stucco exterior could crack. However, modern stucco includes polymers that can increase its flexibility.
  • Stucco can crack over time. Although stucco requires minimal maintenance it can crack due to projectiles or other external elements. The sooner you address these issues, the less damage will ensue later on. Most small cracks can be fixed as a DIY project. But, if you notice any cracks wider than 1/4 inch, then you should consider calling a professional.
  • Due to its labour costs, stucco installation can be expensive.

Paint Colors for 2019: 5 Color Trends for Your Home’s Exterior

2019 is a world of color. More and more homeowners and designers are opting for bold colors and accents that make a statement and create a stunning curb appeal.

Let’s take a look at the different color options and tones that are making an appearance this year.

Neutral Paint Colors

Neutral paint colors offer the best of both worlds: they’re easy to pair with other colors, and they’re aesthetically appealing. Essentially, neutral tones are one of your safest and most effective options for any home exterior.

But how do you pick a neutral color?

There’s two types of neutral tones: cool and warm. In the cool category, you’ll find blue and green undertones. Alternatively, with warms, you’ll find brown, red, yellow, and orange undertones. For exteriors, I’d recommend sticking with cool tones, since they’re rising in popularity.

So what’s the final verdict on neutral colors?

Greige is probably one of the most popular neutral colors for exteriors. However, grey-blues are also a strong contender. Take a look at the gallery below and see which neutral tone your prefer! Notice how the first two images contrast a warm neutral with a cool tone, while the last one contrasts a variety of warm tones that complement each other and add dimension.

Neutral colors are great because they allow for a lot of freedom. Plus, they’re a good choice to increase your home’s resale value.

Dark Paint Colors

2019 is a time to go bold or go home. Exterior paint is switching from lighter neutral tones to dark colors, including navy, forest green, and dark grey.

However, with dark colors, contrast is key. By offsetting a navy paint with a white trim, you can add some serious dimension to your home and make the colors pop.

Another exterior color that’s becoming more popular is charcoal. This dark grey looks great with a white or light grey trim.

Dark red is also gaining in popularity, especially when paired with a white trim.

Soft Colors

Pastel colors are another paint option that’s growing in popularity. Their soft, delicate tones allow for various trim and accent options that can compliment the lighter color.

Pastels are not solely for beach house vibes anymore. More homeowners are using these tones to add some soft color to their home’s exterior.

By opting for a pastel, you can add some color without the overly bold statement of darker colors. It’s also a bit more unique than traditional neutral tones.

White Paint

White paint is a great option for anyone wishing to create a clean, polished design that can brighten any home. Plus, it allows for more freedom to add complementing and contrasting accents.

Here are some options when working with a white exterior:

  • Choose a bold color for your front door
  • Choose a bold or pastel color for the trim
  • Bring some added dimension with other bold accents

Contrasting Colors

When it comes to exterior home design, contrast is vital. Whether you’re contrasting with trim color, deck or fence paint, or accent options, it’s important to add some eye-catching elements.

Just make sure you always sample the colors together. That way, you can ensure you create the intended effect.

5 Easy DIY Exterior Renovations for Your Home

Does your home’s exterior need some TLC? If so, here are some easy DIY exterior renovations you can do in the span of a couple hours or over the course of a weekend.

Repaint Your Trim

Painting your trim can transform your home’s exterior. Whether you want to update old paint or try something different with a new colour, you have the creative freedom to explore various options.

In today’s world of design, contrast is an important factor. If you’re unsure which colour will work best, buy samples (if available) or quarts of potential options. Then, test out the colours and see which one looks best with your home’s exterior.

Next, you’ll want to ensure you clean your trim before painting. If there’s any residue or debris, it can cause imperfections in your paint. Also, try and cover any landscaping or deck/patio surfaces that may be vulnerable to any dripping or spilt paint.

Keep in mind, you’ll first have to scrape off any cracked or lingering paint and sand over it. Once the surface is smooth and primed, you’re ready to start painting.

Check out this helpful post for preparing your trim for paint.

Gardening / Landscaping

Landscaping can be as simple as planting a series of shrubs or placing planted pots on your front deck or porch. It doesn’t have to be back-breaking, strenuous work.

Spending a single afternoon planting some pretty flora can turn your home’s exterior from drab to beautiful.

However, up keeping your landscaping and gardening can take work and is equally important. So, try and find plants that fit your lifestyle. If you’re busy often, find plants that don’t require as much attention. Also, make sure you purchase plants that are appropriate for your climate.

Fence Paint

Painting your fence is another quick and easy way to renovate your home’s exterior.

Some living areas and subdivisions contain paint restrictions. So, before you begin, make sure you contact your development area and find out what paint options are allowed or suitable.

Next, you’ll want to pick out some colour sheets or samples and see which tone looks best with your home and neighbouring fence lines. Also, make sure you choose a high-quality paint that can withstand the elements.

After you’ve picked a colour, you’ll want to clean the fence and scrape off any debris or left over paint. Much like the trim, you’ll also want to sand down any imperfections.

Once your fence is prepped, you can begin sealing off any areas that could be exposed to the paint, such as patios and decks, landscaping, or outdoor furniture.

Now comes the fun part—painting. For an easier task, you can use a paint sprayer (if you have one or can manage to borrow it). If not, you can use a wide paint brush.

For a helpful DIY tutorial of fence painting, see this Youtube video.

Light Fixtures

Replacing exterior light fixtures is another cost-effective and easy way to improve your home’s exterior.

The very first thing you need to do is turn off all power and breakers to your exterior light source. This is the most important step to the entire procedure. If power lingers, then you can risk electrocution. So, I repeat, turn off all power.

Next, you’ll want to remove the old light fixture. Once it’s safely removed, you can install a light mounting block that will ensure your light stays flush with the wall. For some example products, see this home depot page.

Once your mounting block and assembly pieces are installed, it’s time to attach your light. Using a wire nut, first attach the ground wire. Then you can attach the remaining wires with another wire nut.

After your light is wired, you can screw in the light fixture and insert the lightbulb.

I highly suggest watching this video tutorial before beginning this project.

Patio or Concrete Sealant / Paint

Painting your concrete driveway or patio is another way to enhance your home’s curb appeal. Plus, it’s a relatively quick and cost-effective DIY exterior renovation that can add value to your home.

Your first step is to acquire or purchase the following materials:

  • A broom
  • Etch primer
  • A long paint roller
  • Tape
  • Mineral turpentine
  • Hose or power wash device

Once you have the necessary materials, you can proceed to the next step. First, you’ll want to clean the driveway. For best results, mix your primer with water and scrub the surface using your broom. Once the concrete is thoroughly scrubbed and any dirt or debris is uplifted from the surface, you can wash the primer off using your hose or power wash device.

Next, it’s time to tape any surfaces you don’t want to paint over.

After that step, you’ll want to apply some mineral turpentine to your paint. This step allows the paint to thin, making it much easier to work with.

After all the prep work is completed, you can start painting. Remember to paint the edges first, then move on to the main surface areas.

Wait approximately 16 hours, then apply your second coat. Once you’ve applied your coats, wait 7 days before driving your car onto your freshly painted surface.

What’s the Difference Between Stucco Paint and Stucco Coating?

What is Stucco Paint?

Although stucco is a formidable and durable exterior option, its paint can fade at times. Also, if new homeowners don’t like the colour of their recently purchased house, they can paint it a colour they prefer.

As the name suggests, stucco paint provides a layer of new colour to your home. Typically contractors and homeowners will use an elastomeric paint, especially for older homes, because it has better bonding potential and can fill hairline cracks.

What is Stucco Coating?

Stucco coating is a thick, breathable application which has several purposes. Similar to paint, it can alter the colour of your home. However, coating is 8X thicker than traditional stucco paint, meaning it lasts much longer. At CANZ, our stucco coating also comes with a lifetime warranty.

Unlike paint, stucco coating also adds superior protection against external elements and harsh weather conditions. With multiple coating layers, advanced durability, and many other advantages, stucco coating both protects and beautifies your home.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Stucco Paint

Stucco paint can be easily obtained

It can be applied as a DIY project

Save money on contractor fees

Not as durable as stucco coating

Does not last as long

Process can be time consuming

Advantages and Disadvantages of Stucco Coating

Lasts a lifetime

Added and superior protection against elements

Repairs cracks and damages

Fire resistant

Dirt and mildew resistant

✓ Breathable

UV resistant

More expensive

Has to be professionally installed by contractors

Which One Should I Use for My Home?

Based on the list of advantages and disadvantages, it’s clear that stucco coating is the superior option. If you’re looking for a long-lasting and advanced application, then coating is the best choice.

However, you also have to take your budget into account. Because coating needs expert installers and is designed with high-quality and advanced materials, it comes with a higher price tag. But, since coating lasts a lifetime, you won’t have to worry about retouching or painting your home in the long run, and you’ll likely save money in the future.

At CANZ, we have payment options to support a wide-range of income levels. If you have any questions about our Edmonton stucco coating services, please call 780-922-2005 or contact us here; we’d love to hear from you!

Is it Time for New Windows? 5 Things You Need to Know

You may be familiar with the obvious signs that your windows need replacing. Have you noticed frost gathering on the inside of the pane? Or maybe you’ve noticed cold or warm drafts leaking through? These are two very obvious signs that your windows need replacement.

However, there are some signs that might be a bit easier to ignore…

windows in dining room
My Energy Bills Are too High

Undoubtedly, there has been a spike in energy-conscious home design in recent years. Homeowners are more willing to invest in energy-efficient windows and save money in the long run. So, if you’ve noticed a drain on your energy bills, it might be time to consider replacing your windows. Luckily, there is a wide range of different ranges, prices, and assortments of window options to choose from. However, energy-efficiency should be a priority, especially if you live in regions with severe weather conditions.

CANZ Building Products Inc. offers Edmonton window replacement and installation services. To find out more about our energy-efficient windows, head over to our website or contact us.

My Home Needs More Light

Some homes, whether they were designed recently or in distant decades, do not include adequate natural lighting. In many ways, this point goes hand-in-hand with energy efficiency. With more natural light, there’s less need to turn on artificial lighting, effectively cutting down on energy expenses.

Also, for your home’s resale value, windows are extremely important. Most modern homes are now designed with expansive and numerous windows. So, if your home feels less like a main level and more like a basement, you may consider installing additional windows or expanding on the size of existing windows.

Another design to consider is installing a bay window to maximize the natural light entering your home and even provide additional seating space. It’s a win-win!

My Home has Single-Paned Windows

If your home was built before the 1960s or 1970s, chances are your windows are single-paned. As the name suggests, single-paned windows are made with only one pane. In contrast, double or triple paned windows have either two or three panes and include argon gas to provide additional insulation. Double or triple paned windows offer far more superior insulation and will improve the energy efficiency of your home.

If you live in regions with severe weather conditions – whether that be heat or cold – you’ll want to ensure your windows offer adequate protection against the elements. Single-paned windows, although cheaper to purchase, will cause you more headache and higher energy bills in the long run.

If you would like to receive a quote on superior double or triple paned Alberta windows, head over to our website or contact us page.

My Window is Leaking and/or My Frame is Damaged or Decaying

When was the last time you inspected your window casings or frames? If your house is older, you may consider completing a visual inspection and noting any damages. Not only can these damages create leaks – which can have negative impacts on you home’s interior – but it can also cause drafts to sneak into your home.

Although not all damages require window replacement and can simply be repaired, it’s important to note the efficiency of your windows. If you’re spending the money for a repair, it might be more ideal to replace inefficient windows.

If you’ve noticed any damages but are unsure of the severity, contact us if your located in Alberta, and we can assess the damage and help you with your next step.

I’m Struggling to Open or Close My Windows

If you have slide or crank windows that are difficult to open, it may be a sign that they need to be replaced, especially if your windows are quite old.

Similar to damages, this difficulty could be curbed through a repair. However, if multiple windows face the same problem, it’s a good sign that window replacement may be necessary.

Remember, opening and closing a window should be an effortless procedure. If it’s not, then you may consider calling a local window company for a consultation.

Signs and Symptoms: Does My Home Need a New Roof?

A Quick Guide for Ensuring Your Home is Protected

Is your roof looking worse for the wear? Maybe it’s peeling or leaking, or maybe the shingles are starting to come loose. These are all the tell-tale signs that you need a new roof. However, there are some less conspicuous signs that will suggest updated shingles should be on the to-do list.

We’ll start with the more obvious ones, just in case they’re not that obvious.

Curling Shingles

curling roofWe all know what this looks like. Your old shingles are starting to raise, and your roof no longer has that polished, new appearance. This occurrence is a good sign, and most common symptom, of an old roof that needs replacing.

But it could also mean a few other things, such as improper installation or improper ventilation through the attic. So, before you commit to replacing your shingles, hire a trusted expert and see why your shingles are curling in the first place.

At CANZ BUILDING PRODUCTS INC., we offer free, in-home consultations with obligation. If you’re unsure of which step to take next, head over to our contact us page!

Leaking Roof

A common cause of a leaking roof is age. Your old roof, which is perhaps cracked or damaged from UV rays, is no longer able to protect your home from weather extremes. If your roof is leaking, it’s best to call a professional to find the cause.

An old roof is a likely cause, but there are other circumstances that will create a leak, such as missing shingles – which could’ve been torn off in high winds – or holes due to impact or improper installation. Also, if your cutters are clogged, it could be creating a leak inside your home, so it’s best to check this potential culprit first.

If you’re unsure why you’re roof is leaking, your best option is to contact a professional. CANZ’s advanced shingle technology is impact and UV resistant, and has a wind warranty. For more information on CANZ’s roofing services, visit their website.

Algae or Moss

roof with moss on itNow, this isn’t a common condition in the dry summers and winters of Alberta. However, more humid areas may experience this frustrating phenomena. If you notice algae on your roof, it may not be time for a replacement. However, if you attempt to clean off the foreign residue yourself and damage your roof, then you may need to contact a professional.

If your roof has algae covering its surface, contact an expert to have it removed. The last thing you want to do is cause further damage and promote a leaky environment.

Keep in mind that, if algae is forming on your roof, you probably don’t have algae resistant shingles. If this is the case, you may wish to save yourself future headaches and expenses and have your shingles replaced.

At CANZ, our shingles are specifically engineered to prevent algae growth. If you would like to schedule a consultation to discuss your algae problem, feel free to contact us. We’re here to help, after all!

Sagging Roof

house with sagging roofIf your roof is starting to sag, you likely have a concerning issue that needs to be addressed. Sagging is typically a structural issue and can be caused by a variety of issues. It’s important to note that this sagging can not only cause permanent damage to your home, but it can also crack your shingles. We all know what cracked shingles can mean: leaks.

If your experiencing this issue, contact a specialist right away. You’ll need to tackle this already significant problem before it gets further out of hand. If you’d like to speak to an expert, head over to CANZ’s website or contact us page and be directed to a specialist.

Evidence of Loose Granules

The next time your cleaning your gutters, check to see if there’s any small, loose granules. If there are, it’s a common sign your roof needs to be changed. As shingles age, they become more and more brittle and, if left unattended, can start to shed their material.

If your noticing this occurrence, check the appearance of your shingles. If your roof is exhibiting the above symptoms, it’s likely that you’re in need of an upgrade. Contact CANZ if you’re unsure of your roof’s condition. CANZ’s advanced shingles are engineered to withstand the test of time.

Missing Shingles

Were you glancing up at your roof the other day and noticed a few missing shingles? Well, this could be a sign you’re in need of a new roof. Now, there could be various factors causing loose or missing shingles. It could be an age problem, but it could have also come loose during impact.

Improper installation can also cause shingles to come loose at the slightest condition. If you think this is the case, contact a specialist right away.

Another aspect to note is that, if you do have a few missing shingles, it may be difficult to match the colour and fade of your preexisting shingles. Materials fade over time, particularly lower quality shingles that don’t possess UV protection. If you don’t have any issues with having miss-matched shingles or if your budget prohibits you from replacing the entire roof, this may be your only option. However, if you’re shingles are already approaching their life expectancy, it may be a good idea to replace the entire roof.

CANZ’s Class 4 impact resistance ensures your home’s protection even under extreme condition. Plus, the polymer modified asphalt design of CANZ’s shingles are more resistant to tearing and nail pull-off, reducing the risk of loosing a shingle.

First Things First: Take a Look

The first thing you’ll want to do is a visual inspection of your roof. All you’ll need is a sturdy ladder, someone to hold the base of the ladder for safety, and a set of eyes to see if there’s any damage, curling, or algae/moss on your shingles. It’s recommended that you don’t scale across your roof to get a better look. Not only are you putting yourself in danger, but you could also damage your roof.

If you notice any of the above conditions, you may consider calling a professional.

Keep Your Curb Appeal Fresh and Your Exterior Protected!

Do you ever drive by a beautifully stuccoed home and wonder how do they keep it so maintained? Well, wonder no more. Below, you’ll find helpful tips to keep your stucco looking amazing!

Hire a Reputable Stucco Contractor: If you’re new to the stucco world, and you’re thinking about having stucco installed, make sure you hire someone with experience and expertise. The last thing you want is low-quality materials being installed, or, even worse, improper installation. Prevent future damage by investing in a trained profession to install your stucco.

CANZ BUILDING PRODUCTS INC. offers free in-home consultations. If you have any questions about installing stucco on your house, head over to our contact us page. We’d love to hear from you! Also, check out our website for different stucco options!

Keep Your Stucco Clean: There’s nothing worse than a dirty or stained exterior, especially since it’s likely preventable! If you do perform any cleaning, make sure you are gentle. Remember, stucco can chip under high pressured cleaning, so refrain from taking a pressure washer to your exterior. You’ll most likely end up with more damage.

Depending on the style of your stucco and whether it has a rough or smooth finish, you can try using your garden hose to remove dirt or debris. Keep in mind that you want low pressure. You’ll want to gently coax the dirt out of the cracks.

You can also scrub your stucco by hand. However, depending on the size of your home, this can take a lot of time without several helping hands. Some water and a non-abrasive sponge can go a long ways in improving you stucco’s appearance. But remember to keep your movements gentle so you don’t damage your exterior.

If you’re unsure of whether it’s a good idea to turn your stucco cleaning into a DIY project, contact CANZ with any questions you may have.

Look for Cracks: If your stucco is cracked, you’ll have to fill it immediately. A hairline crack can quickly turn into a more serious issue if it’s left unattended. There’s products that are available where you can fill the cracks yourself. However, you’ll have to access the damage. If cracking does appear on your stucco, there may be an underlying issue.

It’s best to have any cracks accessed by a professional. Keep in mind that, if mold, mildew, dust, or other foreign materials, get lodged within those cracks and travel beneath your stucco, you’ll have another list of worries to content with.

At CANZ, we offer a polymer coating technology that repairs cracks and prevents further damage from occurring on your stucco. Plus, our lifetime warranty ensures that you never have to worry about future cracking!

If you want to find more information on stucco cracking, check out our previous post: Maintaining Your Stucco: Everything You Need to Know About Stucco Upkeep and Repairs!

You can purchase stucco paints from most hardware stores; however, you run the risk of simply masking an issue. If you choose to paint over any imperfections, you’ll likely have to continue this process when more mold and mildew or other foreign materials stain your exterior.

By coating you’ll stucco, you’ll add further protection against mold and mildew and prevent future staining. This investment will not only save you money over time, but it will also save you many hours of continuously painting over imperfections. Maintaining Your Stucco: Everything You Need to Know about Stucco Upkeep and Repairs!

From Stains to Cracks, How on Earth Do You Maintain Your Stucco?

How Bad is My Stucco?

This is one of the first questions you have to ask yourself. Is your stucco cracked? Has the colour faded? Are there noticeable stains throughout your home’s exterior? Also, another important question to ask yourself is what type and style is my stucco?

Depending on the severity of your stucco’s appearance, light to more extreme action may be warranted. For instance, if you have a small crack that’s in its early stages, it can be fixed without a large budget and without much headache. However, if your stucco is severely cracked and in desperate need of repair, your budget will have to increase.

Below is a picture of a stucco house with severe cracks. If your home resembles the image below, then your next step is to contact a professional to repair your stucco.

At CANZ BUILDING PRODUCTS INC., we offer an advanced stucco coating product that repairs cracks. Leaving extensive cracking can cause external materials, such as dust, mold and mildew, rain, and other harmful conditions, to enter the wall base and cause further damage. It’s best to keep up-to-date on your stucco’s maintenance. After all, a hairline crack is much easy to repair than deeper cracks.

What if My Colour is Fading?

Stucco can fade for numerous reasons, including UV exposure and low quality materials. It can give your home a washed out and dated appearance, even if your stucco isn’t that old.

However, there are many options you can explore to improve your exterior’s colour. Depending on your skill level and experience, you could purchase your own stucco paint and cut down on labour costs by making it a DIY project. Do keep in mind that if you don’t have experience or knowledge in this area, you may want to consider hiring a professional. Trained and experienced individuals can complete the project with an accuracy that you may not possess, and the results will likely speak for themselves.

Plus, if you don’t possess the necessary skills, you could end up making the problem worse or simply painting over a larger issue. It’s best to first consult a professional before diving into any intense DIY projects, particularly when it pertains to your home’s exterior.

At CANZ, our stucco coating will improve any fading that’s occurring on your home’s exterior. We offer competitive pricing and financing AOC. Plus, our coating technology protects against further UV damage, meaning your stucco will maintain a pristine finish, and our lifetime warranty will allow you to rest easy. Check out our stucco coating page for more information.

What about Stains?

Stains can cause your exterior to appear old and dirty – certainly not the impression you want to make! To remove small stains, there are products on the market that you can use. However, keep in mind that, whatever manual labour you choose to put in, you should retain gentle cleaning.

Depending on your stucco style – if it has a rough or smooth finish – pressure can do a lot of damage! The last thing you want to do is cause further damage and cracks to your home’s exterior. Choose gentle brushes and quality products if you choose to remove the stains yourself. Also, keep in mind that severe staining can take a very long time to remove manually without effective results. Not to mention, if mold and mildew staining has occurred and if your stucco is cracked, you’ll likely have some damage underneath the stucco.

If you are unsure of which step to take, don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions! We’re here to help you find the best option for your home!

Instead, bathroom design has opted for an alternative: a separate walk-in shower. Most people enjoy the easy of simply walking into their shower instead of awkwardly stumbling into a combine bath and shower. The functionality, coupled with the spacious bonus of a walk-in shower, has most people replacing their outdated bath-shower combo with a trendy tiled shower that provides ease and comfort. Plus, with countless different tile options, your walk-in shower can boost your bathroom’s overall design.

If you want your space to have that cheerful, relaxing spa vibe, then a stark white or warm off-white can create an inviting space that you’ll likely not want to leave! Also, you can add intricate tile, wall art, or wallpaper to boost your bathroom’s design without creating a dark environment.

Light, Complementary Tile: Keeping your bathroom light and airy will create a relaxing, comfortable, and spa-worthy space. Using a light tile is a great way to achieve this effect. However, instead of using a traditional plain white tile, try experimenting on something that makes a statement. Perhaps a decorated tile or an off-white to grey tone will give your bathroom a nice pop of colour while maintaining its bright appearance. Try to find something that compliments your walls, fixtures, and appliances, while also creating an appealing appearance. As a side not, if you’re wishing to create a warmer tone for your bathroom, then you may wish to consider installing a neutral tone flooring, such as a faux wood vinyl to protect from water damage.

Contrasting Wallpaper Ascent: An interesting, eye-catching wallpaper is a great way to improve the look of your bathroom. With tons of options and relatively low costs, wallpaper can add contrast, texture, and dimension to any room. Bold colours and intricate patterns can transform any bland bathroom into a trendy, high design space. Before you install your wallpaper though, make sure you bring home some samples and test them out before you begin the installation process. Don’t be afraid to make a statement, but also try to keep your tones within the same colour palette.

Plants: What better way to increase your bathroom’s design than adding some life to it! Whether its a vibrant fern that cascades over your bathtub, or a table top succulent that adds a minimalist flourish to your overall design, plants are a great way to add colour, create a relaxing environment, and, depending on the plant, even purify the air! A little hint: plants are an easy design option that’s great for any room! Just make sure your plant receives enough sunlight, and, depending on the species, that it’s watered regularly. If your green thumb lacks the ability to keep plants alive, don’t worry! Cacti and some other plants are low maintenance and near impossible to kill. For a nice splash of colour, you may even consider adding a fresh bouquet.

Eye-Catching Fixtures: Simply swapping out traditional stainless steel fixtures with something that makes a bigger statement is one of the best ways to achieve a high-design bathroom. There’s tons of options out there for unique fixtures, such as brass, black, white, copper, grey – really any natural tone you can think of! You can also offset your fixtures with your backsplash. For instance, if you choose a bright backsplash, then try opting for a darker fixture. It’ll provide a contrast that will emphasize both designs!

Heated Flooring: Now, this may not be affordable for everyone, but, if you have a little extra left over in your reno budget, consider installing heated flooring in the bathroom. I mean, what’s better than waking up in the night, stepping into your bathroom, and feeling a warm, cozy effect radiating from your flooring? Seriously, there’s nothing better! Also, this reno can increase the resale value of your house and will likely wow any potential buyers.

Flat-Head Rain Shower: These gentle flat-head showers will ensure that you’ll never want your morning routine to end! Add some much needed relaxing and spa-like options to your bathroom by opting for one of these fixtures. It may, however, be wise to also install a shower head with more pressure or a rain shower that has controllable pressure options. If your seeking a spa vibe, then your bathroom won’t be complete with one of these shower heads!

Modern, Detached Tub: Now, this has been a design trend for quite some time, but it’s still worth mentioning. Most people are opting for a separate bath-shower design. Typically a large, spacious shower and a deep soaker tub are on peoples must-haves for bathrooms. Days of the combined shower-bath are long past! There’s tons of bathtub options on the market right now, but try to find one that’s deep enough for optimal relaxation. Remember, when increasing your resale values, the kitchen and bathrooms are very important!
